Ingredients

1 pound Italian sausage (sweet or spicy, based on preference)

1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices of sharp cheddar cheese

4 burger buns (preferably brioche)

1 cup shredded lettuce

1 large tomato, sliced

1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

Your favorite condiments (mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise)

2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

Prepare the Meat Mixture:

    - In a bowl, combine the ground beef and Italian sausage. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat.

      Form the Patties:

        - Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions. Gently shape each portion into a ball without compressing too much. This will help retain juiciness.

          Preheat the Cooking Surface:

            - Heat a large cast-iron skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and let it heat for about 2 minutes.

              Smash the Patties:

                - Place each meatball in the skillet, leaving space between them. Use a heavy spatula or a burger press to smash them down into thick patties (about 1/2 inch thick). Cook for 3-4 minutes until a crust forms.

                  Flip and Cheese:

                    - Carefully flip the patties using a spatula. Immediately place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and let them cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until cooked through (160°F internal temperature).

                      Toast the Buns:

                        - Cut the burger buns in half and toast them in the skillet or on the grill for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

                          Assemble the Burgers:

                            - On the bottom half of each bun, layer the shredded lettuce, a cheesy patty, a slice of tomato, and red onion. Add your desired condiments before topping with the other half of the bun.

                              Serve Immediately:

                                - Plate your Sassy Sausage Smash Burgers and enjoy with fries or a fresh salad!
