Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 large egg

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti pasta until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Once hot, add the diced onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent. Then, add the minced garlic and ground beef (or sausage). Cook until browned, breaking up the meat as it cooks.

Combine Ingredients: Once the meat is cooked, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let it simmer on low for 10-15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.

Mix the Cheeses: In a separate bowl, combine ricotta cheese, beaten egg, ½ cup of the grated Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Layer the Ziti: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the meat sauce, mixing it thoroughly. In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture on the bottom. Dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the first layer, then sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Repeat with the remaining ziti, ricotta, and top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray the foil with cooking spray) and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serve: Let the baked ziti cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for an added touch of flavor.
