Ingredients

For the crust:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the caramel layer:

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For topping:

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Extra sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

Prepare the crust: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy. Add the flour, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla extract, mixing until combined. Press the crust mixture firmly into the bottom of a greased 9x9 inch baking pan.

Bake the crust: Place the crust in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly.

Make the caramel layer: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a gentle boil, then let it simmer for about 5 minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt and vanilla extract until fully combined.

Assemble the bars: Pour the warm caramel over the baked crust, spreading it evenly. If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the caramel layer for added texture.

Bake again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the edges start to bubble. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the pan.

Slice and serve: Once cooled, sprinkle a little extra sea salt on top for finishing. Slice into bars and serve. Enjoy your delightful Salted Caramel Butter Bars!
