To make a great Potatoes Au Gratin, you need simple, fresh ingredients. The key ingredients for a classic dish include russet potatoes, heavy cream, milk, and cheese. I like to use four large russet potatoes. They are starchy and hold their shape well when baked. You will also need two cups of heavy cream and one cup of milk. This mix gives the dish its rich and creamy texture.

Ingredients

4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

2 cups heavy cream

1 cup milk

2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup grated parmesan cheese

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.

In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Heat over medium until hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.

Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly.

Pour half of the cream mixture over the first layer of potatoes, then sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese and half of the parmesan cheese on top.

Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheeses, finishing with a layer of cheddar and parmesan on top.

Dot the top layer with small pieces of butter for added flavor. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

                      - Presentation Tips: Serve in the baking dish for a rustic look, or spoon portions into individual ramekins for an elegant touch. A sprinkle of freshly cracked black pepper and chopped parsley on top adds a lovely finish.
