Pastrami and sauerkraut are two culinary staples that have made their mark in the world of deli cuisine, particularly within Jewish and Eastern European cultures. Originating from the heart of New York City's bustling delis, pastrami is a beloved cured meat that boasts a rich history and a unique flavor profile. It is typically made from beef brisket, which is cured in a blend of spices, smoked, and steamed to perfection. Sauerkraut, on the other hand, is a traditional fermented cabbage dish that offers a tangy, crisp contrast to the savory depth of pastrami.

Ingredients

1 lb pastrami, thinly sliced

1 cup sauerkraut, drained and rinsed

4 large hoagie rolls or pretzel rolls

4 slices Swiss cheese

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare the Rolls: Slice the hoagie or pretzel rolls in half lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through. This will create a pocket for the filling.

Mix the Spread: In a small bowl, combine the Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Spread this mixture evenly on the inside of each roll.

Layer the Ingredients: Start by adding a generous amount of sauerkraut to the bottom half of each roll. Follow with a layer of pastrami, placing it neatly over the sauerkraut. Then, add a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the pastrami.

Season: If using, sprinkle caraway seeds over the cheese for an extra burst of flavor.

Close the Sandwiches: Gently place the top half of each roll onto the prepared fillings.

Brush with Olive Oil: Lightly brush the outsides of each roll with olive oil.

Bake: Arrange the rolls on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool for a couple of minutes, then slice in half. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
