Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef (or plant-based meat substitute)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up with a spatula. Once browned, drain any excess fat.

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.

In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.

Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and rinse them under cool water.

In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Lay 3 noodles on top, then spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a third of the mozzarella and a sprinkle of Parmesan.

Repeat the layering process: add another layer of meat sauce, 3 noodles, the remaining ricotta mixture, half of the remaining mozzarella, and more Parmesan. Finish with another layer of noodles, the rest of the meat sauce, and top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Once baked, let the lasagna cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
