To make an easy macaroni cheese recipe, we need some key ingredients. First, we require elbow macaroni. This pasta shape holds the cheese sauce well. Next, we need a mix of cheeses. I love using sharp cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Sharp cheddar gives a rich flavor, while mozzarella adds creaminess. Parmesan brings a nice salty bite.

Ingredients

2 cups elbow macaroni

4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 cups whole milk

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon mustard powder

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (for topping)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Make the Cheese Sauce: In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 2 minutes until bubbly and slightly golden.

Add Milk: Gradually whisk in the whole milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.

Season the Sauce: Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, mustard powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well.

Cheese Time: Reduce the heat to low, and gradually stir in the cheddar, mozzarella, and half of the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.

Combine: Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is fully coated.

Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Add Toppings: In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the remaining Parmesan cheese, and sprinkle evenly over the top of the macaroni.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Garnish and Serve: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color.

                        Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 50 minutes | Servings: 6-8

                          - Presentation Tips: Serve in individual ramekins for a fun twist, or in the baking dish topped with additional parsley for a standout centerpiece. Enjoy with a side salad for a complete meal!
