Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

4 slices of Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)

4 whole-grain hamburger buns

1 cup arugula

2 tablespoons balsamic glaze

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, a pinch of salt, and stir frequently. After about 10 minutes, add the sugar and continue to cook for an additional 15-20 minutes until the onions are softened and caramelized, stirring often. Remove from heat and set aside.

Cook the Burgers: Shape the ground beef into four patties, ensuring they are slightly wider than the buns. Season both sides with salt and pepper. In the same skillet used for the onions, cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or longer if desired. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Gruyère cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.

Toast the Buns: While the burgers are cooking, slice the whole-grain buns in half and toast them lightly on a separate skillet or until golden brown under a broiler.

Assemble the Burger Components: On each bottom half of the toasted bun, place a handful of fresh arugula, followed by the cheesy beef patty. Spoon a generous portion of the caramelized onions on top of the burger. Drizzle with balsamic glaze for a touch of sweetness and acidity.

Finish the Dish: Cap each burger with the top half of the bun, serve immediately, and enjoy the delightful layers of flavor!
