Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or plant-based substitute)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup bell pepper, finely chopped (any color)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or soy sauce for a vegetarian option)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • 1 Prise salt to taste
  • 1 Prise pepper to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls or burger buns
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 Prise pickled jalapeños (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 Prise fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (or plant-based substitute). Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat if using beef.
  2. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. While the mixture is simmering, slice the hoagie rolls in half lengthwise without cutting all the way through.
  7. Once the mixture is ready, spoon it into each roll, generously filling them.
  8. Top each filled sandwich with shredded cheddar cheese.
  9. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute. Optionally, top with pickled jalapeños and sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving.

💡 Chef's Notes

Serve the sandwiches on colorful plates, with a side of crispy potato chips or a simple salad. You can also wrap them in parchment paper for a casual, deli-style presentation.
