Ingredients

  • 2 large oranges
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Begin by washing the oranges thoroughly. Slice them into thin rounds, about 0.25 inch thick, removing any seeds as you go.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  3. Once the mixture reaches a gentle simmer, carefully add the orange slices to the saucepan, ensuring they are submerged.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the oranges simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, turning occasionally. The slices should become translucent and slightly thicker.
  5. Using a fork or tongs, transfer the candied orange slices to a wire rack set over a parchment-lined baking sheet to drain and cool for about 30 minutes.
  6. Optionally, for extra sweetness, sprinkle a little more sugar on the slices while they are still slightly sticky.
  7. Allow the slices to dry completely, which may take several hours or overnight if desired. Once fully cooled, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

💡 Chef's Notes

Allow the slices to dry completely for best results.
